There had been talks around the camp for a few days concerning the origins of the celestial bodies that were now clearly visible even to the naked eye. Sure, the dark of the desert helped a lot too, but it was only a matter of time before the minds in the light drenched cities would start racing, trying to make sense of the sky phenomena above. Here out in the desert, we were all trying to figure it out before the masses in the settlements panicked.

The first theory of it being debris from the Taurid meteor stream was widely accepted amongst my peers at first, even if I had my suspicions from the start. But the theory fell flat once we discovered that the western constellation of the Persian stars started to move in the same pattern as what we were seeing from this new meteor, comet, star or whatever it was. There was a connection there, waiting to be discovered.

So why did I have suspicions to begin with, even before we discovered the connection with the Persian stars? It was at the time just a hunch, a feeling, a sort of tingle in my body. I felt excited, nervous and scared at the same time. Maybe we all felt it, but there were no words to describe it, we didn't share a language. So we all stayed silent. Until the singing began. And once it started there was no stopping it.

I felt it's comfort at first, wondering who was signing but couldn’t see because of the dark of the desert. I recognized the song even if I couldn't make out the words. The rhythm and the melody was something primal, something we had all heard before. At one point I thought they were singing “die weisheit des paul Prates”, but it was merely my imagination. No one here shared my northern heritage. The stories of Paul and the tower of Alamut were mine and mine alone.

Without noticing, the rest of us joined in. We all did eventually. Joined what now seemed like a requiem to this night and what we were witnessing. And I was singing. Singing along with words I didn’t know, words unspoken in my world. With the song we could all finally understand each other.

We were still singing when the hail started. Stones as big as a grown man's fist bouncing on the sand around us. The dunes acting like a liquid, creating ripples in the black water of the night desert as these stones came raining down all around us, but never striking any of us. As if we were protected.

By instinct I knew that he had come. Every inch of my skin said so. The whispers of the new flesh I had heard all those nights spent at Kliniken, came true right in front of me. The Beyonder was forever present.
